Web Site Video Reaches the "Middle Kingdom"

It has been observed that virtually since its inception web site video has been dominated by major players and user-generated content - BMW and your nephew Bob. But increasingly we're seeing both awareness and interest in the production of net video from the "middle kingdom", from independent professionals to mention one specific segment. Yesterday I met with a cosmetic surgeon in Toronto, a result of a post card marketing campaign introducing our "authority video + search engine marketing" package and the brand new "SiteGreeter" floating video overlay. It quickly became clear that this relatively young professional was right up to date with marketing in the Google era. His practice was already using SEM, and his site appeared on page one of Google search results but he strongly felt the need for video and had engaged a new web developer, chiefly for their record in search engine optimization. Having done my homework I pointed out to him, in a table within my meeting kit, that of the ten practices that appeared on page one of the search results (Keyword:"cosmetic surgery toronto") five used SEM, three used SEO and two used both. Of the same ten sites, one had video clips available, and given the format and appearance of them, had used them for several years.

Our young surgeon not only recognized the value of video introductions and procedure demos but was also educating himself on current options for presenting them. He described a media centre approach, a page with one central embedded screen and thumbnails below, each clickable to send the underlying video to the main player. Interestingly to me, he stated that his colleagues in the US were far more advanced in their use of web site video because, he believes, their market is considerably more competitive than his. For both the producers of web site video and for those considering its use this is a key observation. It demonstrates the conviction that net video is a top-tier tool for taking on your competition. Our surgeon will be among the very first to use it in his market and understands that tying it to sponsored links gives him an edge, at least for the next couple of years.
